Continue Reading →If this were a Twitter bio, I would say, “I believe that (usually) there is a better way to do things in applications. User experience, design, VR, AR, cycling, racing.” Oh wait, it is my Twitter bio.
Current location: Dublin, Ireland.
I work with customers (and in some cases customers of customers), to help craft experiences that would help them achieve their goals.
I trust in good research, data and quick iterations of the design chasing those goals.
I‘m a Product Designer experienced in imagining and crafting digital products. I love helping non-profits make an impact and businesses achieve more than what they are hoping for. I am most comfortable working as a part of product management, conducting hands-on research, wireframing and prototyping solutions.
Currently, having returned from a sabbatical, I am working at CoolPlanet taking care of all things UX and defining our design system. I do probono projects, get in touch if you have a good cause.
Pro bono and volunteering are fundamental parts of my ideology. I believe that as designers we can make a significant impact by making sure the right sections and causes are supported. I make sure to put in upwards of 40 hours towards this each year.
I ensure the time is spent on projects that I feel will make the most impact at that point in time.
If you are an organisation or an individual trying to make a social impact, but you are time and resource-strapped. I can pitch in with UX research, service and business design, branding, product design, or strategy to help with this.
Include the work your organisation does, the number of employees it has in addition to the work that you are looking at running past me. I respect your time. Write to me in detail and to the best of your ability. It will help me make an informed decision.
Identify areas that the senior population have the most trouble with when it comes to interacting with modern technology. If you want to do just one thing, call an aged person and spend 30 minutes speaking to them about any topic they want.
Working as a bike courier for 3 months to get insights and hands-on experience into the messenger lifestyle. Challenges faced, the grit that keeps this sector going and areas where the improvements can happen. Before I can write more, tip your bike couriers.
One person’s trash is another’s treasure. Do not let usable clothes find it’s way to the trash way before they can serve another person for a longer time than you think. Check if anyone can use it or find a charity closeby.
Created original artwork in exchange for donations to a lake’s annual maintenance fund. If you want to do just one thing, pick up just one or more pieces of trash when you visit a lake. Reduce the amount of waste you generate, every bit helps.
If you are here to look around, this gives you a fair idea. Not all of these apply to all projects. Stay cool, stay pragmatic.
I work closely with cross-functional teams like testing, development and business teams in addition to customers. Insights gained from other places can be valuable, not just to us designers, but even to the other teams to understand our process.
I believe in almost always starting with sketching on paper. It is the fastest way to iterate and has served me well. In a cross-functional situation, drawing low-fidelity wireframes on a whiteboard is super effective. For me, it takes time off while creating production quality wireframes in a tool like Sketch or making a clickable prototype in Figma or Axure. Let’s go!
Research of one kind or the other. For me, research does not happen in only one phase of a project or needs to be extremely time-consuming. Any kind of research or research data that I can get, helps. I like to look for patterns that help vindicate our design decisions or changes required from my end.
I like to start with defining strategy and methodology for UX projects by conducting content audits, competitor analysis and requirements gathering. Using current KPIs and analytics to define the path we take towards optimisation and structure.
Workshops, both formal and informal workshops to hash out the big-ticket items like the journey mapping to day-to-day items like use cases, stories and grooming the backlog to keep all of this manageable. No one likes too many unknowns being juggled at the same time without a plan.
In products that have been built on more modern stacks, being able to analyse the data that brought customers here and planning what can be improved make the customer’s journey smoother.
While I like to extract personas, use cases, stories and models during the research phase, these require tuning as I design and test. Having a tuning session and refreshing knowledge once in a while does keep our data and goals in perspective.
In addition to maintaining design systems, I like to contribute new patterns and components to the pattern libraries. This helps me standardise patterns and layouts across the product suite when required. Especially true, when working across a suite of products.
Many things get me thinking. Few things I feel like writing down. Fewer things I actually get around to writing down.
So many drafts. Someday, I promise myself. Someday.
